Jay-Z has already gone platinum (unofficially) with his new free album Magna Carta Holy Grail and it hasn’t even been released yet. How was this done? According to The Verge, Hova sold 1 million copies of the upcoming free album at $5 a pop to Samsung, so that the giant electronics company can hold exclusive rights to the project for 3 days, and promote their line of products via a new app on the Google Play store.
While the album has already sold 1 million copies to Samsung, it’s unknown if this will count toward official Soundscan numbers but like Jay-Z says, “men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.”
Hov took to his Twitter account to stunt about the deal, which will reportedly net him around $20 million.
Jay-Z – Magna Carta Holy Grail drops July 4th exclusively to Samsung product owners, and July 7th for everybody else. Completely free.
