Rapper and philanthropist Kendrick Lamar was honored by the California State Senate for his services to the Compton Unified School District on May 11th. He was given the 35th Generational Icon Award by state senator Dr. Isadore Hall, III of the 35th District as well as state governor Jerry Brown.

When being honored with the award, Kendrick had this to say:

“It’s definitely an honor to be right here in front of you guys,” said Kendrick. “Being from the city of Compton and knowing the parks that I played at and neighborhoods, I always thought how great the opportunity would be to give back to my community.”
